In youth sports through high school, athletes train at their respected sport on average of about 5 months. Some athletes compete in other sports, which require about the same amount of dedication / time. Some athletes only compete in one sport and then do nothing at all during the "off-season."
Keep in mind there is a small number of very determined and driven athletes that compete in one sport and train periodically all year round. Even inside that small number, most of them never achieve their most important goal, whatever it may be.
They train 8 - 10 months a year, practicing, drilling, competing. They "outwork" everyone in the practice room. The eat right, they're well conditioned from staying active and training extra. The one thing they didn't do was increase their overall body strength during the time of the year when it's most critical.
In my opinion, all too often the blame gets put on various other reasons, when the most simple and obvious reason to me is that they weren't strong enough to execute when they needed to the most. They have great technique, their conditioning was right on, they ate right BUT, so did their opponent. Their opponent was also just a little stronger and quicker because he chose to increase his strength and quickness and it showed up when it mattered.
Now, without insulting anyones intelligence, winning big matches takes more then technique, conditioning and strength. Your mental game has to be tough too. Over the years, I've learned you have to train your mind as much as your body. Considering you talk to yourself more than anyone else, Champions can't let negative thoughts enter their head. Think back to the Olympics with Phelps. He was definitely getting smoke prior to winning his 6th Gold Medal, but he didn't see himself losing, somehow he had one extra push that won him the race which translated into a record setting performance.
The two important problems that often go un-noticed when it comes to competing in wrestling.
- Strength Training
- Mental Preparation
