Weight training for kids of all ages could be dangerous and counter productive when its done WRONG.
I like to introduce my campers and club members to new methods of strength training that is safe, fun and very productive. Many of these workouts can be done in a practice room, gymnasium or local park..
For example:
How many rounds can you do in 20 minutes:
15 sand bag swings (same technique used with kettlebell)
15 medicine ball throws (you need a brick wall, eg. side of building, gymnasium wall, etc)
15 box jumps (you could use plyo boxes, bleachers, tire, or picnic table seats)
15 Pullups (if you don't have a pull up bar, use a swing set, or tree branch)
That workout is very competitive and fun regardless and it mixes things up. Especially if it’s done with a few wrestlers that are in great shape.
If your from the old school and are reminded of the old myth that states, "Strength Training" for kids isn’t safe and could ruin their growth plates. Part of this could still be true. However, training with supervision, training for endurance, stamina and conditioning and training smart usually takes care of any problems with growth plates.. Obviously, You don’t want your 12 year old maxing out on the bench press or shoulder press. That wouldn’t be smart and could cause problems.
I’m a believer of traditional methods of strength training using Olympic lifts with dumbbells and bar bells (i.e. squats, cleans etc). They are very important and definitely should be taught. However, I’ve found that working with body lifts, using ropes, logs, tires, playground equipment, sand bags and sleds, the younger and older wrestlers have alot more fun and stay committed longer. These workouts I designed are proven to gain more muscle endurance, on top of more strength and power in a shorter period of time. And the best part every athlete I work with looks forward to each workout. Its tough to get athletes to commit to a lifting program at a local gym or school, especially at the time when they should be getting stronger (during the spring, summer, fall).
Who wants to be in a hot gym when they can be outside, climbing trees, having tug o’ wars, and getting just as good if not better overall strength results faster.
This summer, Roehlig Wrestling Camps will feature new training methods that produce very fast results:
