Underground Strength Training

Coach T. Roehlig Interrogates Zach Even – Esh on Training Wrestlers

Over the last several months, I've had the pleasure to meet Zach Even-Esh. Without sugar-coating this experience, I'll simply start by saying he's introduced me to a variety of different training methods as well as educated me on various techniques and philosophy's. I'm currently working on designing a few camps and clinics that are going to feature many of the new workouts I've been exposed to through Zach..... Below and above is a just a taste of what can be expected.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

#1. Who is Zach Even-Esh ?
ZE – Wow, that’s a TOUGH question! I am a man filled with passion for everything I do. I have a passion for combat sports of all types, a passion for the iron, a passion for physical culture and a passion for life in general. I believe man should be strong, no excuses for being weak and flabby!

I grew up in NJ pretty much all my life. My family moved from Israel to the states when I was 1 year old. My father grew up in Romania and my family has a history of being involved with physical sports of all types as well as Military experience. I am one of the very few in my family who has not been involved with the military.

My personal interest in training wrestlers evolved as I experienced many injuries as a wrestler and also competed in bodybuilding. My performance in wrestling was always slightly above average. My mental preparation was a HUGE weakness on my end, but my strength methods also were completely guided by FLEX magazine. If I was flipping tires, sled training, chopping wood, climbing rope, etc, I’m sure my mind would have been trained to deal with the adversities more so than what I experienced being under a leg press or a smith machine. My mistakes have become the benefit to countless others who are learning from my current methods.

#4. When working with Youth, What should the main focus of training be?

ZE – Kids needs to develop a foundation, just as I’ve addressed above. Kids need to have fun, and I have found that the movements based around gymnastics training, rope climbing, jumping, throwing, etc. are great methods for developing the foundation kids need and they are fun. These methods are not just for younger kids, they are often required for high school athletes as well, who often have no foundational strength. This is proven when they can not perform 20 quality push ups, 5 perfect pull ups, a perfect deep squat and so on.
